How to refresh your home in time for Spring
As Spring makes herself welcome, it’s time to freshen up our homes. Yes, with a little bit of planning (and a lot of elbow grease!), you can give your house a thorough spring clean and style update. All it takes is a few simple steps for your home to feel renewed and ready to greet the new season.
Clean, cull, declutter
Now that the warm weather is here, it’s time to pack away those Winter woollies. Rid your wardrobes of clothing and shoes and your shared living spaces of accessories and items that are gathering dust and taking up valuable space. How do you know what to hold onto and what to part with? In the words of decluttering goddess Marie Kondo, ask yourself, “Does it spark joy?” Start with one drawer, one section, or one room at a time. Categorise your items into those that you can donate, throw away, pack away and keep. Once you’ve decluttered, give your home a thorough spring clean to get it ready for your new interior styling.
Update your style
Spring is the best time to update your home decor. Spruce up your home room by room so that your home feels inviting during the busy warmer months ahead. Introduce colour and pattern to instantly brighten your space and lift your mood.
Start with your home’s entrance. A great way to make a statement is by painting your front door in a vibrant pop of colour (how about pillar box red or emerald green?). Add a statement mirror to bounce off light, or some wall art. Update your decor in the living area with bright cushion covers, a few pot plants or freshly cut flowers. Add interesting accents like books for your coffee table, and curios on the console to give the room an eye-catching but easy spring refresh.
Sometimes the best way to make a space feel new is with a simple layout change. Rethink and reorient your furniture layout by moving your living furniture around to capitalise on the sunlight flowing into your home at this time of year. Moving on to the bedrooms, give them a mini update by switching your heavy winter bedding for fresh new linen that’s lighter and brighter and replacing heavy drapes with airy curtains. Don’t neglect your garden – plant new veggies and flowers and bring the outside in with a few pot plants. A few small changes will make a big impact.
Invest in something new
Spring is the perfect time to invest in something you love. Make sure your purchase resonates with your home’s style so that it’s something that you’ll have forever, regardless of passing trends. Skip the cheap, poorly made pieces; instead choose furniture with depth and feel. If you’ve been thinking of updating your furniture, spring is the perfect time to go for it.
How about a new coffee table or an entertainment unit? Don’t forget to replace that tired old armchair or side table that’s too clunky. If you don’t want to spend big in the bedroom, invest in something small but significant, like bedside tables or a bookshelf to display all of your treasured items.
Storage sorted
Spring is all about freshness, so think about smart storage solutions to keep clutter at bay. Whether it’s your home office that needs an update (hello, unfiled invoices and tax returns) or your kids’ bedrooms that need a bookshelf for all their bric a brac, choose storage that can evolve as your family and/or your home changes. Make sure you buy storage that’s multi-functional, space-savvy and good looking. Choose furniture items that serve multiple purposes to use every nook and cranny of your home wisely.
There you have it; a few simple steps is all it takes to transform your home from tired to beautiful in time for Spring. So, what are your plans for the weekend? Did we hear you say “Spring cleaning”?
